National Green Tribunal Jurisdiction What Types of Cases Does the NGT Handle?
You may have an environmental dispute concerning your property, your business, your project, your community or the public interest. While your first question may be a simple one, the answer is not. “Can the National Green Tribunal hear my case?”
The short answer is that it depends on what type of environmental dispute you have, what type of relief you are looking for and if your dispute is covered under statute. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) was created to specifically and exclusively handle major environmental disputes and related matters. When you or your business are affected by pollution, environmental harm, a project dispute, ecological damage or enforcement action, it’s important to choose the correct forum from the beginning to prevent loss of time and money.
BK Singh Advocate assists individuals, companies, organizations and affected parties to know whether an environmental dispute can be properly raised in an NGT suit and determine what legal options are available to them.
We don’t want to just file your matter in a Tribunal. We want to build you a strong environment case. And building that environment case starts with educating you about your dispute, pinpointing the exact environment statute that applies to your dispute, examining the evidence you have and figuring out if you can bring forth your case in the NGT. If you’re uncertain if your suit should be filed in the National Green Tribunal, consult with our Environmental Lawyers.
Why Does NGT Jurisdiction Matter for Environmental Disputes in 2026?
Can every environmental grievance be filed before NGT? Certainly Not. National Green Tribunal is a specialized statutory forum and has jurisdiction only over environmental legislations which are specified under National Green Tribunal Act, 2010.
NGT Ankit has represented clients from Delhi, New Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Faridabad, Meerut, Hapur, Lucknow, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Agra, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and other parts of India. For them the ground reality many a times is not if we can identify an environmental grouse. But if the facts and relief sought are within the Tribunal’ statutory ambit.
There can be a pollution case against an industrial unit. An individual can be affected by environmental degradation. A company can receive a regulatory/environmental statutory notice. An upcoming project can have environmental clearance- related disputes. But every situation is not the same legally.

What Does NGT Jurisdiction Actually Mean?
NGT Jurisdiction – Means the authority of NGT to entertain and adjudicate upon such environmental disputes, complaints and appeals which are assigned to NGT under NGT Act, 20 10 and the List of Environmental Laws given therein..
Therefore the jurisdiction of Tribunal depends not on a party calling a matter an "environmental dispute".
For example if there is a civil dispute regarding land and in same dispute there is a mention of environmental issues. This would not be referred to NGT.
Again if you have some dispute with your neighbour related to trees/ drain / construction you cannot say the forum is only because the issue is being labelled as such. BK Singh Advocate would analyze the main subject matter of dispute and relief sought for determining the forum.
