Supreme Court Jokingly Threatens Dharna Over Pedestrian Crossing Issues on Mathura Road
Case came before the court regarding pedestrians on the busy Mathura Road towards the direction of Delhi High court.
Supreme Court bench comprising Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice KV Viswanathan on Friday took liberty and told that if no action is taken to provide safety to the pedestrians on Mathura Road the court will sit on Dharna on Main Gate of Delhi High court on 25th November.
The Bench took exception against the non fixing of the foot path/foot over bridge at Mathura Road Delhi High Court Junction which passes by National Zoological Park and every day lakhs of Advocates, Litigants and children pass from this spot.
Speaking to ASG Vikramjit Banerjee the court took liberty and stated that,
“If it does not happen before the next date we will be at main gate of Delhi High court. And we will not let you go home till the work is done. Confidently say that. Baith jaayenge wahan dharna karne ke liye baith jaayenge (we'll sit on dharna). We will not allow mr Banerjee also to go home”
Mr Banerjee said that they have constituted a committee which is working on the matter after discussing it at high levels. To which the court questioned why the bureaucracy needs to find fault with such an easy task.
“Why you need a committee for that purpose. Need some engineer? Take mr Gaurav agarwal he will help you. Why do you need High level Committee include him in the committee. He will show you that what all is the problem there.” It noted.
Giving timeline to the authorities the court told that it should be done before 25th November else no excuses.
“But let it be done before 25th November. Its sure. Don’t give solution. Let it be concreted. Else your chief secretary will be there with you. You understand?”
It also added that, “If it does not happen before the next date we will be at main gate of Delhi High court. And we will not let you go home till the work is done.”
During its observations in the months of October 2025 and Sept 2026 the court was noticing that no red signal, foot over bridge etc on the Mathura road which is very densified by road users.
After court directive one of the signal for the pedestrians was placed but as per Mr Gaurav Agrawal Amicus Curiae it doesn’t work most of the time and red signal needs to be put and speed breaker.
Cause listed for hearing on 25th November.
Though the court spoke in a light note but at the same time Delhi is experiencing lot of Dharnas these days.
